Methodist Men News
The Yard Sales for 2011 have concluded with another successful season.
Thank you to all our vendors and to anyone else who came out for a yard sale this year. We could not make these events happen without you.
The yard sales will return on the second Saturday of April 2012, and continue on the second Saturday of each month through October, 2012.
We look forward to seeing you then!
Welcome
The Methodist Men of Thalia United Methodist Church welcome you and extend an invitation to all men who want to be a part of a good Christian men's organization involved in doing God's work. We invite you to join us.
Purpose
Thalia United Methodist Men shall be a creative, supportive fellowship of men who seek to know Jesus Christ, to grow spiritually and to seek daily his will. [Our] primary purpose is to declare the centrality of Christ in the lives of men and in all their relationships.
Concerns
- To encourage knowledge of and support for the total mission of The United Methodist Church.
- To engage in evangelism by sharing the fullness of the gospel in its personal and social dimensions.
- To clarify and speak to the identity and role of the man in contemporary society.
- To seek commitment to discipleship.
- To study and become familiar with The United Methodist Church, its organization, doctrines, and beliefs.
- To cooperate with all units of United Methodist Men in obtaining these objectives through district, conference, jurisdiction, and church-wide goals.
Ministries/Programs
Heart Havens
Heart Havens is highlighted in our prayers and support. The VA Conference-sponsored Heart Havens provides fully-functioning homes for mentally handicapped persons who lack a support system. Homes in operation now are: two in Norfolk, one each in Powhatan, Colonial Beach, Richmond, Winchester, Kilmarnock, Stuarts Draft, and Waynesboro.
Individual members can make private gifts, and our Men volunteer at the Norfolk homes each year to help with maintenance and landscaping. If you are interested in Heart Havens or assisting the Men in this ministry, please contact Mark McKinney at markmckinney123@cox.net
Boy Scouts
Scouting at Thalia United Methodist Church is of great importance and priority. The TUMM sponsor Boy Scout Troop 372, for young men ages twelve (12) through eighteen (18) years of age. We also sponsor Cub Pack 372 for boys ages seven (7) through eleven (11).
The training and guidance received by these young people will be invaluable during their life's journey. We encourage every parent with a son or daughter seven (7) through eighteen (18) years of age to enroll them in a scouting program. For more information on Thalia's scouting programs, please contact Russ Lincoln at umm@thaliaumc.org.
Youth
Our youth are our future. The TUMM recognize that our youth must be trained and guided in the ways of our Lord to become fishers of men and good citizens. Each year we provide our church's youth and children's programs with both volunteer and financial support. Our Men are committing to setting a good example for our young people.

Thalia United Methodist Men Scholarships
The United Methodist Men of Thalia UMC are happy and proud to be able to again offer two scholarships this year. These scholarships are to support higher education and/or training leading to certificate-level qualification in a recognized trade.
The first scholarship, valued at $1000, is the TUMC Educational Scholarship. This award will be made to the selected applicant who demonstrates a high level of academic progress and is seen by the committee as having a significant financial need.
The second scholarship, the Al and Margie Scholarship is valued at $2000. The awardees will be selected on basis of academic credentials, financial need, and validity of certificate sought or academic progression specified. In addition, the involvement of this applicant with activities of TUMC and the local community will be a significant factor in selection.
Past history indicates applicants submit applications very close to the deadline. This prevents the potential TUMM sponsor to have time to assist the applicant and the selection committee by suggesting amplification or phrasing of the applicant's submission that may prove beneficial. This is particularly true if the applicant is an adult and pursuing a career change.
There is a single application for either scholarship. All applications received will be reviewed for both scholarships provided the application meets the following minimum criteria:
- A member of TUMC
- Have been accepted for enrollment in an accredited institution of higher learning, have provided proof of application for such and will be accepted prior to commencement of the fall semester following the date of scholarship award or,
- Have proved enrollment and acceptance in a valid certification program
- Are active in TUMC/community life
- Are sponsored by an active member of TUMM
Each scholarship will be paid directly to the applicant. Awardees will be expected to provide TUMM with feedback concerning the application of the scholarship and the awardees progress towards goals stated in their scholarship application.
Applications will be available on the TUMM website and from the Church Administrator, and may be returned to the Church Office. Applications are due by 1 June 2011. Awards will be presented on June 19, 2011, Father's Day.
Additional information is available from any active United Methodist Man.
Download the application here. Applications will also be
available at the church office.
The deadline for application submission is June 1, 2011.
The scholarship recipients will be announced June 19, 2010 during the 11:00am Worship service.
